*Cosmic Forge* FAQ

The inscriptions on the walls seem change in some incomprehensible pattern. After awhile, astonished, you finally notice that they seem to follow your thoughts... or at least are trying too...

  • Q: I have some problems installing Mods for W8 under Windows 7.

  • A: When you just copy some files from elsewhere to some W8 folder (under Wizardry 8\data), nothing will happen - the files will not be seen by Wizardry 8 or *Cosmic Forge*. Copying files to the game folder (according to the Mod's installation instructions) under Windows 7 includes four steps:
    1. Go to the source folder, highlight the files to copy and press "Ctrl+C".
    2. Go to the W8 folder you need to copy those files to.
    3. Click the 'Compatibility Files' button in the Windows Explorer.
    4. Press 'Ctrl+V' to paste the files. Now Wizardry 8 is able to "see" (and use) these files.

  • Q: I got an error "OctMeshModel::Read -- Wrong Shader type" when Game tries to load a Location.

  • A: One of the Textures used in this level has an erroneous alpha channel data. Replace that Texture by another one or edit it and correct alpha channel. Occurs for "South East Wilderness" Location, bad texture is "woodroof2.tga".

Another reason is when you have a Terrain Mesh that has both opaque and translucent faces. A Mesh can have only one type of Faces - either opaque or translucent for the Wiz8 3D engine to work correctly. To fix it use "Recombine Terrain Meshes (OCTree-wise)" command in the Location Editor.

  • Q: In Game some Terrain pieces disappear/appear depending on the party position and orientation.

  • A: Have you used command "Tools"->"Recombine Meshes (OCTree-wise)..." for your Location? This command is available since version 3.40. Otherwise here are some more advice:

    • Have you "Rebuilt OCTree" after your last changes to the Terrain? If yes then consider splitting problematic Terrain Meshes in half.

    • Are some of your Terrain Meshes sprawled over the big areas? Meshes should be as compact as possible for the best result. The command "Tools"->"Recombine Meshes (OCTree-wise)..." takes care of it automatically.

  • Q: The Editor crashes at some point.

  • A: Report to mad god with some description on what you are doing to make it crash.

  • Q: I have Wiz7 Gold version from GOG. When I try to apply one of the patches (like the resting patch) I get the error: 'Failed to get length of the file c:\GOG Games\Wizardry 6 and 7\Wizardry 7 Gold\wizard.exe'.

  • A: The fresh install contains wizard.exe, but after the first launch it gets renamed to wizard_720.exe for whatever reason. Rename it back to wizard.exe. You might need to update whatever shortcuts or scripts (including DosBox scripts) are used to launch wizard.exe instead of wizard_720.exe. AS weird as it sounds.

  • Q: I have Wiz6 from GOG. When I try to apply 'Spell Books' patch or 'Spell Resistance Bug' patch it says "Failed to change/restore the algorithm."

  • A: The 'Spell Books' patch has never been implemented for Wiz6 and will be removed from the options. The 'Spell Resistance Bug' has been fixed by GOG using Portable Gorilla's and the other guy (don't remember his nickname) patch which is not being detected by CF. Next version of CF will detect it and report properly.
